Uncertainty Of Bloodstock Purchases
An example of the luck that exists in the purchase of bloodstock was provided by the recent settlement of a bet at the New Subscription Rooms, Newmarket, says a London exchange. At the 1933 December sales at Newmarket, Miss P. Paget gave 6600 gns. for Dorigen, 8200 guineas for Salome, and 6200 guineas for Speckle, making a total of £22,050. A discussion arose at the club as to which of the three mares would do best at the stud, and each of the three members placed a level stake in an envelope that was not to be opehed until Boxing Day, 1938.
When the mares were sold they were in foal, and, commencing with 1936, each has been represented in races Up to the end of last year, Speckle’s daughter, Crumb, was the only winner of a race,' and that was worth £l9B. She also had a couple of minor placings. Dorigen’s son. Jubilee Son, scored a second, which carried £200; and Salome's progeny had not furnished a place-getter. The Total amount credited the progeny of the throe mares since they were bought by Miss Paget is £436.
ON EASY LIST. Gay Movie is at present enjoying a let-up from racing, but will shortly be returned to work again to prepare for racing at Easter. She has filled minor places on several occasions this season, and she should soon be among the winners. Gay Movie’s next appearance will probably be at Paeroa.
A USEFUL STAYER. A useful stayer discovered at Te Rapa was the four-year-old mare Beeswing, who scored a very easy victory over seven furlongs, after making all thO running. On the strength of that fine effort, she was heavily supported in the apprentices’ race on the second day, and she might have won again had she not met with trouble twice on the journey. Even then, she came home well for third money. Beeswing lias not raced very much, and she looks like doing good service for her joint owners, trainer J. M. Buchanan and Dr. M. G. PezarO.
OVERDUE VICTORY. There were several surprises at the To Aroha meeting last week-end, but the greatest of these was the victory of Galilee, whose win marked her first success since she accounted for the Woodstock Stakes at Waipa in May, 1936. NEXT OUTING FOR AJAX. The Victoria Racing Club’s autumn meeting opens at Flemmgton next Saturday, when the Newmarket Handicap and the King’s Cup will be the items of main interest. Ajax will be running in the Cup.
FOR TARANAKI. , The Te Awamutu owner-trainer A. Rowan may patronise the Taranaki meeting with Cheval de Voice and the two-year-old Fils de Vaals, the latter being engaged in the Taranaki Stakes, which Cheval de Voice won so surprisingly two years ago. Olympus is also left in this event, so Auckland may be worthily represented. In addition to Cheval dc Voice, .northerners in the Taranaki Cup are Sorgia (last year’s winner). Prince Rang! and Jonathan.
