Bitten By Shark
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WARKWORTH, This Day. Mr T. S. Ramsbottom, of Warkworth, suffered severe lacerations to the left hand when he received a bite from a captured shark at the mouth of the Matakana River on Sunday. Mr Ramsbottom was attempting to haul the shark, about 7ft. in length, by the tail into the boat, when it swung around and bit him on the hand. The injured man was attended by Dr, R. V. Shaw, of Warkworth, and was able to proceed to his home.
Ex-Servicemen’s Successful l icnic
With pipers to the fore, members of the Empire Ex-Service Association on Sunday participated in what is probably their most successful Whangarei picnic. There were between 600 and 700 people present, three launches and more than 100 motor cars conveying the party to One Tree Point. Launches left the town wharf at intervals.
It was a tuneful voyage. One launch carried members of the Whangarei and County Pipe Band, and another a piano-accordeon. In particular, the efforts of the pipers were appreciated, not only for their music on the launch, but also for the many selections played on the grounds. Community singing was popular, and there were races galore for the children. Perhaps most fun centred round the Diggers’ race. When R. Rogers touched the tape well ahead of the rest of the field, a howl of good-natured protest went up, and he was immediately disqualified as a “dark horse.” Appointments were perfect, and the weather glorious. When the launches returned to the Town Wharf between 6.30 and 7.30 p.m., all participants voted the day the “best ever.”
