[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] ROTORUA, This Day.
Mr. Reginald Smith, aged 62, proprietor of the tea rooms at the buried village Te Wairoa, was attacked by a Maori intruder in the early hours of yesterday morning. Mr. Smith was awakened by an unusual sound, and when he went to investigate. a strong electric torch was shone in his face, and he was struck heavily on the mouth and sent reeling back along the verandah. Steadying himself against a counter he saw his assailant making off down the road.
The police were communicated with, and while they were hurrying to the scene they saw a car which had been overturned on the road apparently striking a bank.
They saw a Maori dodge from the side of the car, and one of the constables gave chase and caught the man after going about a hundred yards. Mr. Smith had to receive medical attention in Rotorua yesterday for facial injuries.
