Cross Street Sealing. Cross Street was closed to traffic this morning when bitumening operations commenced. Leading immediately past the Primary School and to the High School, this link, via Gorrie’s Road, carries a heavy volume of traffic, and sealing will terminate the dust nuisance. Kawakawa Venus. The figure of Venus de Milo was taken as their standard by the judges of the Miss Kawakawa beauty contest, held in conjunction with Fitness V/eek. At the town picnic held at Paihia the field of eleven was narrowed to three —Misses Dulcie Stokes, Nellie Goodhue and Mrs Brewer. The final decision went to Miss Stokes whose measurements were almost identical with those of the venus. Over 200, transported by train and launch, enjoyed the picnic.

Three Judgings In Pig Championship. Owing to the intense interest being shown in the Northland Provincial section of the National Bacon Pig championship, the Whangarei A. and P. Society has decided to award prizes for the Northland Provincial section on the hooks at Moerewa. A well-wisher of the society, who wishes to remain anonymous, has donated the prizes, which will result in the competitor being given three chances of success —on the hoof, on the hooks, and as bacon.

Further Grant for Rugby Park. A further allocation from the Employment Promotion Fund has been made to the Whangarei Rugby Union for continuation of the work on Rugby Park. The first allocation of £250 will be expended by the end of this week, and this further grant will enable the union to continue the employment of the seven men at present at work on the park until probably the end of March, when Scheme 13, under the Employment Division of the Labour Department, will discontinue on the operation of Social Security.

Tennis at Stanley Street. A friendly tennis match between Stanley Street and Whareora clubs was played at the Stanley Street courts on Sunday. The visitors were welcomed by Mr W. Flower, captain of the Stanley Street Club. Teams were very evenly matched and at’ the conclusion of the day’s play honours were even. Mr Hoban, on behalf of Whareora players, thanked Stanley Street for its hospitality. « « • • Bend-Down Bowlers. V?! Although from an onlooker’s point of view bowling may not be very strenuous exercise, one competitor in the North Auckland Bowling Centre’s singles tournament, with a mathematical turn of mind, computed that in each day he stooped approximately 800 times to pick up his bowl. If this was not strenuous exercise,, he wanted to know what was. Some of the competitors, who had fo play more than four games in the day brought their tally of bending into the four figure mark.

a • • • Plucky “Wee” Jim O’Grady. A figure to catch the spectator’s «ye at the Bay of Islands swimming championships was “Wee” Jim O’Grady. Jim O’Grady, a schoolboy of very small size, entered for the junior diving championship, and, although unplaced, received a great round of applause when the announcer called “Wee Jim” • for his turn. The manner in which the I'ad pluckily took his turn off the high board, and the neatness of his performance brought him well up in points, and it is clear that with more inches to his stature he will soon be taking his place more evenly among bigger and older competitors.

Borough Rates. To facilitate the payment of rates the council’s office will be open on Monday and Tuesday evenings between 6.30 and 8.30 o’clock for the receipt of rates only.
