Government Speeds Up Defences: Standing Army of 10,000 Wanted
(Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. 'J'HE FEDERAL GOVERNMENT HAS DECIDED TO INCREASE THE PERMANENT MILITARY FORCES BY 2000. THE PRESENT PERMANENT FORCES NUMBER ABOUT 3000. The strength of the militia has reached 61,359. The Minister of External Affairs, Mr W. M. Hughes, announced that the enlistment will be continued until about 82,000 men have been secured, t The briskness of recruiting is apparent on comparing figures. Since last Tuesday the militia has increased by 3600. Last week the Melbourne correspondent of the “Sydney Morning Herald” said that it was almost certain that the Federal Government would adopt the recommendation of the Inspector-General of the Australian Military Forces, Lieut.-General Squires, for the formation of a standing army of 10,000. .
