N.Z. Cargo-Handling Dearest In World
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”] WELLINGTON, This Day. The handling of cargoes is more expensive at New Zealand ports than anywhere else in the world, according to Captain E. Mathy, Australian representative of the Norddeutscher Lloyd Shipping Line, who arrived at Wellington yesterday by the Awatea. Captain Mathy said that of all the ports visited by the fleet of the North German Lloyd, those of New Zealand proved the most expensive to the company because of the high harbour costs, principally in the loading and discharging of bargees. Recent statistics for the whole of the line's shipping activities throughout the world proved that the expenses of using New Zealand ports were higher than those of any other country. They were likely to lead to an increase in freights on New Zealand cargoes. The efficiency of handling cargo here was lower than anywhere else. Shipping companies had hoped the position would be improved, but gradually it was growing worse and worse.
