(Received 1 p.m.) SYDNEY, This Day,

Mr J. A. Lyons, in ,a national broadcast, said: “As long as the present disturbed state of international relations persists, Australia will be in a position of danger. “Our safety can best be guaranteed by continuing, as we are doing, with an extensive defence programme. “If democracies stand fast arid are united in their policy of rearmament to resist aggression, there is hope for the world.”

Mr Heffron, leader of the Heffron State Labour Party, in his first public statement on defence, said he supported the proposed large Federal expenditure on defence provided it was properly directed The New South Wales State Government has advised military authorities that it is willing to reorganise its programme of public works in order to begin construction of railways and roads and other urgent military work.
