“Happy As Love-Birds”: State House Tenants
"The little lady was as happy as a love-bird,” said the Hon. R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, after ho and Mrs Semple had visited a young couple living in one of the smaller dwellings at the Bobbie’s Estate Stale
house colony, Whangarei. It had been predicted that the Stale house scheme would result in the building up of slum areas, but the Whangarei scheme was striking evidence to the contrary, said Mr Semple.
He had been impressed with the beautiful surroundings at Bobbie’s Park, and was pleased that the State had been able to acquii’e so much of this picturesque countryside. The couple in the house they had visited had previously been boarding, but now had boon provided with a comfortable little home at 17- per week, the Minister pointed out. Mr Semple also saw the work on the newer colony at McLeod’s Block, Mill Road, and was very pleased with iho progress made.
j Reports reaching London or marr.- : festatrons of anxiety by the Moslems | in India regarding the safety of Holy Places of Islam in Jerusalem Stave caused some surprise here. It is clear that this anxiety is not shared by the • various Arab delegations attending the Palestine Conference —neither the delegation of Palestine Arabs nor those of tire Arab countries—because it 1 is well knwon that the Holy, Places remain in the custody of sheiks who are their traditional guardians. It is also well known that no one has the slightest intention of altering ‘ this | position, for which Britain recognises ' her responsibility
