Kaikohe Wants New Post Office

Figures showing the remarkable increase in business transacted at the Kaikohe Post and Telegraph Office, and illustrating the urgent need of a new office, adequate for the requirements of the town, were submitted to the Kaikohe Chamber of Commerce at its last meeting. During the past three years telephone installations increased from 201 to 272. and private boxes from 120 to 175. No more boxes are available and there are a number on the waiting list.

Motor registrations increased from 343 to 743; radio licenses, 169 to 314; rural boxes, 44 to 58; miscellaneous payments and receipts, £6282 to £9092.

Toll calls increased by 14,000 and telegrams by 2500. Congestion Causes Inconvenience.

For some time Kaikohe citizens have been endeavouring to persuade the department that a new post office is an m’gent necessity, as the facilities for handling the ever-increasing volume of business are hopelessly inadequate.

Every day there is congestion at the mail counter, entailing serious loss ol time to business people. The reason for this is that there are insufficient private boxes, and no room in the present building to provide more.
