Centennial Planting By Harbour Board

To commemorate the work of former members of the board, the Whangarei Harbour Board is to engage on a programme of tree-planting.

This is in line with the suggestion made by the manager of the Dominion Centennial Exhibition, Mr Hainsworth, for district Centennial memorials.

At the monthly meeting of the board Mr E. L. Whimp reminded his fellowmembers that an area on a hill at Port Whangarei, the site of a former Maori' pa, had been suggested as a suitable locality. If planting was to be carried out next year, the board should order its trees as soon as possible, he said. “There will be a big demand for trees next year,” he added. Planting 1 on Port Road?

Mr H. E. Hewlett suggested that trees might be planted on the Port Road.

The chairman, Mr J. A. Finlayson, said this road was under the control of the county council, but an arrangement might be made in that respect. Mr K. M. Stevens considered the esplanade on the Tbwn Wharf basin waterfront might be a suitable venue tor tree-planting, while Mr R. H. Allan suggested trees might also be planted on the reclamation cricket ground. The matter is to be discussed further at the next board meeting, Messrs Finlayson and Whimp and the engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser, to study the Port Whangarei site in the meantime.
