WELLINGTON, This Day. The following rehandicaps have been declared for the Wanganui Jockey Club’s meeting, to be held next. Thursday and Saturday:—

Juvenile Handicap: Varimond, 71bs., making 8.7.

Victory Handicap: Mataroa, lOlbs making 8.12.

Wang'anui Cup?; Siegmuhd, 41b?., making 8;2. Tayfol’th Handicap: White Gold, 71b., making 8.7. Petre Handicap: Red Cat, 51bs., making 9.9. MAY BE AT GORE. Foxlove is recovering from the injured muscles he suffered at Wingatui, and an effort will be made to have him in form for the Gore meeting next Friday and Saturday. BENEFICIAL SPELL. The Wrecker, whb was put 'aside after his return from Sydney in the spring, has been recommissioned by F. D. Jones. He is in fine order to commence a further preparation. ANOTHER FOR SYDNEY. The two-year-old Beau Vite, by Beau Fere from Dominant, who created a big impression by his success at Trentham last month, is to appear again at Trentham next month, and should he again shape well a trip to Australia is contemplated with him. He is still engaged in the A.J.C. Sires’ Produce Stakes and the Champagne Stakes, to be decided at Ranwick during the Easter campaign.

DAM OF ROYAL CHIEF. Modiste 21., the dam of Royal Chief, did not, unluckily, contribute to the stud book before producing the winner of the James Hazlett Gold Cup. per first foal, by Bucks Hussar, died. Then came a miss, followed by two Chief Ruler foals that died. Royal Chief then appeared, and, after missing to Beau Pere, Modiste 11. and her 193(5 foal were sold to go to Australia, at the dispersal sale of Mr J. Donald's stud. A MISUNDERSTANDING. J. Murfitt was promised the mount on Western Song at the recent Dunedin meeting, and when it was decided that Recollection would not start, Jack went short of a few meals to get down to the weight. When he turned up at the scales, however, he was informed that V. Langford had been engaged, and the latter was given the ride. Western Song made short work of the opposition on opening day, and his jumping was a treat to watch. He was soundly beaten by Recollection on the second day, but the latter had to break a track record to do it. This was the third time that Western Song had been beaten by Recollection.

NO RULE. The Rules of Racing do not include the definition of n hurdle race beyond the fact that it cannot be run over loss than li miles. At one time, a 11 miles hurdle race was officially announced as to be decided over . seven flights of hurdles. The number of hurdles is now left to the discretion of a club. ’ and when the hurdles are reduced to six, as is the case at Wingatui, there is an inclination to favour a galloper rather than a hurdler. The rules should stipulate the number of hurdles to be used and the distance at which they are to be erected. A hurdle race loses its spectacular attractiveness with a reduction of hurdles, and also stands against the well-schooled hurdler, who is supposed to be encouraged by the sport with the object of eventually converting it into a c’-'oss-country performer. _ * .iff, if-
