Ajax Equals Carbine’s Record

(Received 10 a.m.) MELBOURNE, February 19. Carrying 9.12, Aurie’s Star won his second Oakleigh Plate at the Victoria Amateur Turf Club’s meeting, which opened at Caulfield yesterday. Aurie’s Star is the only horse who has won the race twice. Ajax received an ovation when he equalled Carbine’s record of 15 consecutive wins, by brilliantly capturing the St. George’s Stakes. Results:—

Bond Handicap, of 1000 sovs.; one mile and three furlongs.—Buzalong, 9.3, 1; Respirator, 8.1, 2; Kingdom, 7.11, 3. Ten started. Half a head; three lengths. Time: 2.191. Oakleigh Plate, of 1500 sovs.; five and a-hnlf furlongs.—Aurie's Star. 9.12. 1; Pamelus, 9.10, 2; Unishak. 7.9, ?. Three-quarters of a length; a length. Time; 1.51. St, George Stakes, of 1000 sovs.; weight-for-agc; nine furlongs.—Ajax. 9.0. 1; Young Idea, 9.2, 2; Spear Chief. 9.0, 3. Six started. Length and aquartor each way. Time; 1.51.1. SIMILARITY OF NAMES. There is very close resemblance in two names that have been registered during the past fortnight with the Racing Conference. The names are To Mura, a three-year-old filly by The Ace. and To Muri, a filly foal by Whirlwind. If these two mares later go to the stud, there is liable to be some confusion in pedigrees later on.
