Mr Semple’s Tour. Hon R. Semple, Minister of Public Works, left Whangarei this morning for Kawakawa, where he received deputations from the Bay if Islands County Council. In the afternoon he proceeds to Russell staying at the Duke of Marlborough. Tomorrow he will make a launch trip.- The itinerary for Monday is: 9 a.m: Leave Russell for Kerikeri, via Opua; inspect Bay of Islands county bridging programme; lunch at Kaeo, and afterwards make a launch trip on the Whangaroa Harbour.

Jetty for Parua Bay Hotel. Permission to build a private jetty at Parua Bay was granted Mr 6. R, Powell by yesterday’s meeting cif the Whangarei Harbour Board, subject la the plans being approved by the board’s engineer and the Marine Department,- The new jetty will be built at the Parua Bay Hotel site, • * ■* ■ • >■*>.' Inter-House Tennis. Considerable interest is being displayed in the inter-house tennis competition which is being conducted by the North Auckland Lawn - Tennis Association. Philpott, at 5 p.fn. next Monday. On the same day a farmers’ progressive tournament is to be held at the'Mairtown club’s courts in connection with the physical fitness campaign.

Sand Yard Extension. “Owing to the increase : in trade. I find, the present sand yard too small and in the wrong position,” stated Mr R. W. Patterson in a letter received by the Whangarei’ Harbour Board yesterday. He asked that the grabdredge be used to reclaim the bank in the locality to enlarge the yard, and that piles be driven to strengthen the fence. On the engineer, Mr W. M. Fraser, stating that the board at present had no plant available for the work, consideration of the request -was deferred for a month, the engineer to furnish a full report in the meantime.

Swimming Cancellation. The Whangarei Swimming Club has cancelled its normal weekly club night next week in order to take part in the Fitness Week arrangements in the Town Wharf basin on Monday evening. On the following Tuesday, February 28, the club’s second carnival of the season will take place.
