Country Children and “Learn-to-Swim”
Provision being made for country children during the learn-to-swim campaign was discussed by the Whangarei Harbour Board yesterday. A letter was received from the Whangarei Amateur Swimming Club pointing out the activities and benefits of the organisation and asking for finan- [ cial assistance, in connection with the | campaign. | Mr K. M. Stevens asked what benefits country children were receiving from the campaign. “Country people desiring swimming instruction are fully at liberty to attend the Whangarei baths and receive instruction free of charge,” Mr E. L. Whimp explained. As far as swimming facilities for country districts were concerned, said the chairman. Mr J. A. Finlayson. it appeared that the obligation lay with the areas concerned to raise the necessary finance. The board could assist by contributing to this end. ' “I for one will be willing for the board to give such districts as much financial assistance as we give the local club.” he said.
The board agreed to contribute £5 towards the Whangarei club’s funds.
