Primary Schools Re-Open
With the close of the long summer vacation, primary school children, in common with others throughout the Auckland Education Board district, commenced ‘another year's studies today. Although as yet, roll numbers are below those ruling at the end of the 1938 school year, they compare favourably in cases with those of opening day last year.
Whangarei School Figures, The Whangarei School commenced this morning with a total roll of 436, including 27 new admissions. Of the new pupils, about 14 were five-year-olds experiencing their first day at school, the remainder being transferred from other schools.
“New pupils will be coming in for the next week or two, and present j figures are by no means definite,” sJaid the headmaster, Mr H. H. Hor- * ner, this morning. When the school broke up in December the roll was 473, and of these 64, pupils have continued on to the intermediate department of the Whangarei *High School, Position at Whau Valley. Whau Valley’s opening roll this morning was 207, including, 14 new admissions. Nearly all of ihese tare five-year-olds. “The usual number of new pupils deceived at' the opening of the first term of the year is about 25,” said the headmaster, Mr T. W; Bowman. At the end of last term 20 pupils left who will continue on to the intermediate depiartment of the High School,
Hora Hora Rolls Maintained.
The attendance at Hora Hora should be well maintained this term, remarked Mr W. D. Teesdale, headmaster.
Last year’s breaking-up roll stood at 220, and with the number of new scholars being received there was every prospect of this figure being equalled, or even bettered, within the next two weeks.
Changes in Staff. A few changes in teaching staffs are reported from the local schools. At Whangarei, Mr L. E. Richmond has commenced duty in place of Mr J. Rarity,* who has taken up a new position at Edgecombe, Bay of Plenty. Miss Wright is still on extended sick leave, and her duties are being carried out by Miss F. E. G. McMillan, who has been appointed as relieving assistant.
Miss Booth also joined the staff as probationary assistant today. She was formerly stationed Vat Mount Eden, Auckland. Miss F. Nicholson, probationary assistant at Hora iHora School last year, has now joined the staff of the Whangjarei High School. There are no changes in the Whau Valley School staff. New Infant School at Whau Valley. Tenders have closed for the building of the new infant school at Whau Valley on the section recently secured for this purpose, 'and men are now occupied in draining the site. The paths leading into the Hora Hora School has been resealed during the holidays, together with portion of the playground at the top of the tennis courts.
