Gale Ravages Te Aroha

One of the most sustained gales in the town’s history is raging in Te Aroha causing widespread damage and working havoc with trees and gardens. The wind sprang up yesterday, and increased in velocity during the night. A boarding house opposite the Domain gates had the whole of the front verandah and sleeping porch torn away’ Boarders report that the building rocked all night, and at 2 a.m. the verandah was lifted with a splintering crash.
Mr P. Bain’s large garage was demolished yesterday morning, the timber being; spread over; a wide area, and the cars and lorries being exposed to the weather.
The lax'ge building occupied by Bycroft Motors in Whittaker Street was also unroofed, but has since been repaired. Fences are down in all pai'ts of the borough, while fruit crops are ruined.
Business in Te Aroha yesterday was practically at a standstill. A high wind was still blowing last evening.
