Brothers Injured By - Motor In Kaitaia Street

KAITAIA, This Day. Two brothers, Allen Head, aged 21 and Arthur Head, 26, were struck by a motor car driven by Mr Kerr, of Victoria Valley, as they were walking along the main street of Kaitaia to'wards their home, at 9,30 on Saturday night. Both are now in hospital suffering from concussion. The two men were walking on the roadway, and the accident occurred close to Wilson Moore’s service station. The car,' coming from Puckey’s Avenue along Mona Street, turned towards Awanui on reaching Commerce Street, and, owing to the blinding light of a car coming from the opposite direction,, the two men on the road were not seen by the driver till he was within a few feet. He was driving yery slowly and was able to pull up .immediately after the accident. At the time the service station was closed and unlighted. The injured mien were taken to the hospital oy Kerr.

Whangarei Deep Sea Fishermen

In spite of heavy rain, a party of six ; Whangarei sportsmen—Messrs; C. L. Palmer, H. W.' Codlin, F. H. Thomson, J. A. Powell, J. Barron and W. F. Barron —enjoyed themselves in the Bay. of Islands deep sea fishing grounds' off Cape Brett yesterday. Fishing from the launch Phyllis, members of the party were thrilled by the fight put up by a 103 lb. mako shark. All hands had a turn at the rod and, even when brought right up to the boat, the game little fighter was loath to give in. The party also tested the qualities of the fighting kingfish, several of the species being caught.

JJYSTERY surrounds the finding of a, Maori, Mr. George Kahi, single, aged 24, of Pukekohe, lying at the side of Massey Road, Te Kauwhata, at 11.30 o’clock on Saturday night. He was suffering from severe head injuries. Police officers are making widespread inquiries, but they were able to gather little information yesterday to support the suggestion that Mr. Kahi w,as the victim of an assault. *** * •

jg OUGHT only three days* ago a sedan motor car was stripped of many essential and expensive parts after being stolen on Saturday night in Auckland. The front seat, battery, carburettor, distributor cap, spark plugs and tail light were among the parts removed from the car. The car w,as owned by Mr, Charles Belton, formerly a police constable, who had just come from Gisborne to reside in Auckland.

Two hundred members of the staff and estate workers wore gas masks, and hid behind concrete bombproof shelters in a mock air raid on Sandringham House, -watched by Their Majesties the King and Queen, and the Princesses. Smoke bombs represented gas bombs.

The police raided the Irish quarter of Liverpool and arrested five, including a father and two sons, on charges of possessing explosives. They seized documents and army signalling apparatus.

In the table tennis world championship men’s final at Wembley, H. Bergman, cf Austria, defeated B. Vana, the title-holder ,of Czechoslovakia. In the women’s final, Jean Nicoll (England) defeated Dora Emdin (England).

The executive of the Australian Women’s Athletic Association granted permission to Decima Norman to accept an invitation to visit New Zealand, provided she is accompanied by a woman manager. Miss Norman hopes to make the trip, but has to consult her employer, with whom she has only recently commenced work. Miss Norman ran brilliantly on Saturday, and won the 100 yards handicap race in 11.1 secs, equalling her Empire Games time. V. P. Boot (New Zealand) comfortably won a 440 yards handicap race in 50.1 secs.
