Three Cars Trapped on Onerahi Road

Few roads in Northland have a more treacherous surface than the Onerahi-Whangarei highway. Throughout the • summer months there has been a tremendous volume of traffic on the road, and this, coupled with the long dry spell, has resulted in most of the surface binding material being swept or blown aside, leaving bare stones and long series of pot holes. Whem rain fell yesterday, a treacherous surface presented itself, and no less than three cars fell victim to it. Slippery Metai Early in the evening a big sedan car skidded on the wet metal about half way to Onerahi, coming to rest among the mangroves in the tidal estuary alongside the road. Fortunately the tide was out, otherwise a serious accident might have occurred. As it was the occupants escaped with a shaking. Returning from Onerahi during

steady rain at about 8 o’clock last night, a modern sedan went too near the edge and became stuck in the licjuil mud flowing along the embankment. The efforts of several passers-by anc a rarm lorry with rope attached brought the car back to the surface. Another car was noticed in difficulties under similar circumstances later in the evening. Here again, willing help was forthcoming, and the unfortunate car driver was able to continue his journey more carefully.
