The surprise of the day in connection with play in the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual provincial championship tournament at the Stanley . Street courts yesterday was the defeat of J. W. Gunn and Miss M. Beverley, holders of the combined doubles championship. They were in the semi-final by W. T. Pountney and Miss N. Beverley. The other semi-final in this event was won by R, W. Smith and Miss P. Cook, who defeated N. F. Bedford and

Miss B. L. Bishop. The final of the men’s B grade singles was also decided, J. D. Mitchell defeating G. M. Radonich in straight sets. Further Results. Results were:— Intermediate Boys’ Singles.— Third round:‘J. B. Smith beat C. W. Smith, 6—3, 7—5. Intermediate Girls’ Doubles.— First round: Misses W. Smith and N. Symes beat Misses Price and J. Howie, 6—o, 6 Misses R. E. Horn and W. Whyte beat Misses R. Carr and I. 75, 6—2; Misses J. McDonald and R. Smith beat Misses C. Endean and P. Thorburn, 6—l, 6—4. '’pHE Canterbury Education Board, by nine votes to two, yesterday morning virtually decided that swimming is not a “game” and that it should be permissible for swimmers to use the school baths on Sundays. However, by a motion passed by the board, tennis players and ethers will not be able to use the school grounds for the purpose of playing games on Sunday.
