Australians Not To Play At Wimbledon

SYDNEY, January 27. ' In the semi-final of the Australian women’s tennis singles championship, Mrs Hopman defeated Miss Coyne, 6—3, 6 —4, and Mrs Westacott defeated Miss Hartigan, 6—2, 6 —3. The council of the Australian Lawn Tennis Association has decided that the Australian Davis Cup team will not visit Wimbledon this year, but will go direct to the United States. The semi-final of the Australian men’s lawn tennis singles resulted:— J. E. Bromwich beat V. McGrath, 6 —o, 6—3, 6 —4; and A. K. Quist was too good for J. H. Crawford in straight sets, 6—l, 7—5, 6—3.

CHEQUE for £IOO as a gift to-

wards the fund for Wellington’s proposed Anglican cathedral has been sent by Lord Bledisloe, former Gov-ernor-General of New Zealand, to the Bishop of Wellington, the Ht. Rev. H. St. Barbe Holland. In a letter to Bishop Holland, Lord Bledisloe said the gift represented £SO from himself and £SO from Lady Bledisloe.
