D. France Out Of Auckland Tourney
LSflecial I to “Nprthern r Adbocdte;’! ■ AUCKLAND, This Day, Yesterday, the annual Auckland provincial lawn tennis championships were continued at the Stanley Street courts. Owing to arm strain, D. G. France, of Wellington, was compelled to withdraw from'the men’s singles championship. Of the other visitors, R. G. Pattinson. Canterbury, and Miss E. Plummer, Hawke’s Bay, both won their singles. The doubles match between J. D. Bull and B. MeL. Wallace and D. Anderson and H. N. Potter, which had been adjourned at six-all in the fifth set owing to failing light on the previous evening, was continued yesterdayS With the approval of the referee, Mfr S. A. Cleal, the, final set was replaced. Bull and Wallace won this and So took the match. i Ran Foil Distance.
; There was another five-sets’ contest irt the men’s doubles yesterday afternboii between the Waikato representatives, R. Matuschka and L. Roach. aikd/E. D. Lusk and J. D. Mitchell, the litter pair prevailing.
The veteran combination of A. K. Turner , and, A. C. Johns provided to J: C. Charters and R£ G. PattinsOn. The former pair opened strongly by winning the first sat <with the loss of one game only. *The holders of the ladies’ doubles title, Misses B. L. Bishop and P. Cook, won in straight sets from Misses M. and R. Hodges, while the Beverley sisters had a similar success over Miss Brown and Mrs R, S. Milne. ,
The match between Misses M. MacFarlane and R. Taylor and Misses J. Hansen and J. E. Ramsey was'productive of steady tennis, with the former pair being successful. Misses B. Griffiths and J. St. George scored a meritorious win over the Wellington partnership of Miss E. Plummer and Mrs D, G. France. Miss Griffiths rose to the occasion splendidly in the filial set, her volleying and smashing being of a high standard. Today’s Play Results of today’s play were:— Men’s singles: J. W. Gunn beat A. S.* Burns (junior title-holder), 6—o, 7—5, 8-t-l; J. T. May son beat J. Charters, 6—3, 9-£, 6—4; N. F. Bedford beat L. ■ Roach, 9—7, 6—o, 6—2; R. H. Lewis 1 beat M. R. Andrews, 3 —6, 6—o, 6—3, 6—41; R. W. Smith beat R. R. Lees by defdtilt
