“Whangarei People Not Smartly Dressed”
SAYS VISITOR Whangarei people are not generally so well dressed as are the people of southern centres, according to at least two recent visitors to Northland. This, they say, is particularly true of men. One through traveller compared Whangarei with Wellington—an unfair comparison, perhaps, considering that one is the centre of a rural community and the other the capital town of New Zealand. Smart Wellingtonians. In Wellington, he said, people are not only bettor dressed and smarter in appearance than they are m Whangarei, but they move more quickly, appearing to be always in a hurry. In this respect Wellingtonians make a far better impression than do Aucklanders. Traffic, too, is brisker in Wellington, and traffic inspectors are the essence of smartness. To make a right hand turn at an intersection .in the capital city, motorists swing round in front of the officer on point duty. It saves time. At many Wellington intersections, both pedestrians and traffic are controlled by lights. “It’s an excellent idea.” the visitor remarked.
