LUMINOUS fiery toll, believed to be a meteor, was observed by riflemen at the Trentham, Wellington, range on Monday morning travelling at great speed through the air at what appeared to be a few hundred feet above the ground. Mr S. F. McLean, president of the Wellington Rifle Assedation, who was an eye-witness, said the meteor, in spite of brilliant sunshine, was clearly visible. He did not actually see the meteor strike the ground.

Miss MacDougall was sitting in a car waiting for a friend when a Maori girl employed at the hospital rushed out calling that the washhouse roof was on fire. B Y six votes to two the Waitaki Hospital Board yesterday decided to apply to the Local Government Loans Board for authority to raise a loan of £BO,OOO for extensions and the installation of equipment at the Oamaru Public Hospital. It is proposed that half of the £BO,OOO be found by the hospital district and half by the Government. The board has also received petitions circulated throughout North Otago signed by 405 ratepayers, and two other petitions, signed by 56 ratepayers, emphatically protesting against the loan.
