Swimming Water Purer Than Tap Supply
Belifs that swimming baths and pools were unhygienic were criticised by Mr W. O. Stockley, Auckland organiser of the National Committed of Swimming and Life-Saving, when speaking to members of the Whangarei Swimming Club last night. Tests carried out during last year’s outbreak of ear and nose infections had revealed that the water in many swimming pools was purer than ordinary drinking water, and that the majority of them were kept well purified b*y chemical processes. Ear and Nose Infections.
In ‘any case where the Health Department found water with a bacteria count greater than the safety maximum, the department had power to close that bath, he said. Last year, he went on, blame for the outbreak of ear and nose infections w*as attached to the closed swimming pools. It was unfortunate that these should have been counted responsible. - lilt often happened that the germs of these infections were already in the swimmer, and the sudden • inrush of air and the hard blowing involved in swimming, sent these germs into vital parts. This had been given as tan expert’s reason for the outbreak.
