NORTHLAND TRIBE

“Advocate” Office, Water St-Whangarei. y , . Tuesday. January 24, 1939. Dear Northlanders— ’ I was very pleased to receive this week a letter from Hilda Webb containing- a story she had written by herself. ’ Hilda's a very hard worker and has sent scores of contributions to the “Young Northlander.” Hut most of her work has been, copied. > f V This week, however, Hilda tried her hand at a short story. It may not have been exceptionally good, but It did deal With an adventure experienced! by two girls who tried, to be brave, and consequently it made quite-Interesting reading. Hilda, 1 hope will keep on trying. If she does she is sure to improve and her .story writing, will be more fun than ever. Let’s hope that many more Northlanders take a leaf: out of Hilda’s book. We need plenty of stories for our page—and there’s still a little of the holidays left. Talking of holidays, I deserted the Princess and the Son and Heir last week-end—simply crept out When no one was looking and went ’off with the Chief Reporter and Betty B to Whangarei Heads. Playing truant paid this time, because on Sunday afternoon I saw a most wonderful sight—a school of porpoises leaping and gambolling in the surf, some of them coming to within twenty-five yards of the beach. They seemed to be having a tremendously good time. Two appeared to be having a race to the beach—and couldn’t they speed! I thought for sore they'd tun aground, but at the last minute both turned in a flash and doubled back on their tracks. Last I saw of them they were heading north still hugging the coast, so perhaps some of my Far Northern warriors and maidens saw them, too. Make the best of the rest of your hols., won’t you, Northlanders. School soon! ja m
