Case For Small Ports In Import Decrees
[Per Press Association. Copyright .l GREYMOUTH, This Day. The necessity for approaching the Government in a conciliatory spirit in an endeavour to remove anomalies arising out of the import regulations was stressed at a meeting of Greymouth importers. It was pointed out that the Go.vernment had been compelled to take action to conserve the London funds, but that the position was not fully understood, particularly regarding importers of seasonal goods who are unable to import in the first half of the year if they had not done so in the corresponding period last year. Delegates to the Wellington conference were instructed to endeavour to have the licenses based on importations for two years, or, alternately, for the whole year, instead of six months. The delegates will also be instructed to endeavour to secure adequate consideration being given the smaller ports, it being pointed out that in the past whe'n a new tariff was imposed, importers outside the main centres had been placed at a disadvantage.
