Negroes to Battle For World Title
(Received 12.30 p.m.) NEW YORK, January 22. On Wednesday night, two Negroes will battle for the world heavyweight boxing title for the first time since 1913, when Jack and Jim Johnson met at Paris.
Curiously there is again a similarity in names.
Joe Louis (holder) is a six to one favourite, and hi's bettors are laying four to one that he will knock out John Henry Lewis.
It is considered that the champion’s punch will be too severe for Lewis, who has built himself up from a 124 stone boxer.
Lewis has announced that he intends to box for the first five rounds, then get in and fight.
Louis plans to go all out from the start. Both men are in tip-top condition.
It is anticipated that 18,000 will attend at Madison Square Garden and pay 100,000 dollars to witness the contest.
