Northland Tour Ends Today

TENNIS

Members of the North Auckland Tennis Association’s touring junior team completed a round' of engagements North of Whangarei at the week-end. The tour was strenuous—so strenuous that one girl wore out a brand new pair of tennis shoes. All the players,, however, are fit and well, and looking forward to their Auckland tournament. A fine spirit of friendship exists between members of the team, who have benefited considerably as the result of matches played. Experience First Aim. Mr K. M. Hayr has not matched members of the team against each other, and they have played in a different order each day, the games being arranged to give players the greatest amount of practice. The aim of the manager has been to give players experience, and not the winning of matches. He felt that more matches might have been won at the various centres had the team been differently arranged. That, however, was not the aim of the tour. The team left at 8.45 this morning for Paparoa. where they will spend to-day in further matches. They will proceed to Auckland tomorrow, and receive further coaching before the commencement of the Auckland junior championships on Thursday. Interesting Games at Kawakawa,

When Kaikohe cancelled the visit of the Northland team, Kawakawa stepped into the breech. No ladies and only a few men, were available. However, Wyatt and Simpson, who were both strong exponents, contested many games to give the boys practice. Mr K. Hayr, manager of the team, also utilised the day for coaching, and he and Mr Colthart played doubles with the boys to give them instruction. The only match for girls was a doubles against a men’s pair. Praise for the organising ability and keenness of Mr G. Verry, who, at very short notice, had arranged the day, was expressed by Mr Hayr. Results, with Kawakawa names mentioned first:— C. Wyatt lost to B. Leech, o—6, o—6; J. Simpson beat K. Crawford, 6—o, 6 —5; G. Verry beat B. Cadman, 6—2, 6—4; C. Wyatt beat L. Hilford, 6—3, 6—2; C. Wyatt beat H. Brown, 9—6; G. Skudder lost to R. Pollock, 2—6, 3—6; R. Steadman beat R. Babe, 6—4, 6—3; J. Simpson beat K. Lane, 6—3, ; 6—3. Doubles: A. Stanley and R. Hooson lost to K. Babe and Hilford, o—6,0 —6, 5 —6; Verry and Steadman lost to Hilford and Babe, 6—3, I—6,1 —6, 4—6; A. Stanley and R. Hooson lost to Misses McDonald and Smith, 6—5. 3—6, 4—6;' J. Simpson and Skudder beat R. Pollock and Brown, 6—l, 5 —6, 6 —3; Hooson and Steadman beat Cadman and Lane, 6—2, 3—6, 6—4. Kawakawa won eight games to Northland’s five.
