Million Bid For Aged Man-O’-War

(Received' 10 a.m.)

NEW YORK, January 13

Mr Samuel Riddle, owner of Man o’ War, announced that he has refused an offer of 1,000,000 dollars for the racehorse from Mr Louis B. Mayer, the cinema producer.

The announcement caused surprise, since Man o’ War is 22 years old, and his stud value has been reduced.

Mr Mayer, who has recently undertaken thoroughbred racing, declined to comment.

HORSES FOR COURSES. Oratory has a fine record at Trentham, and she is as good now as she ever was. i e ON EASY LIST. Submission cut one of her legs on the journey south from Auckland, and is unlikely to race again until Easter. HOMILY’S PROSPECTS. Homily has not been asked to do much hard work since she returned to Wanganui from Ellerslie, but she is in great heart and should be at the top of her form for the Wellington Cup next Thursday, in which race she will be ridden by W. J. Broughton. WORTH WATCHING. War Lap showed good form on the Taranaki trip during the holidays, and as he appears all the better for *his racing, this gelding should be worth watching. War Lap will not be taken to Trentham, as it is intended to race him in the Hack Cup at the Ashhurst meeting on January 23. ONE FOR ASHHURST. The good race Amatory ran in the Stratford Cup suggests that the Kiosk gelding will play a prominent part in the settlement of the Ashhurst Cup on January 23, in which he has the minimum. Amatory has done all that has been asked of him since the holidays in pleasing style. MAY RACE IN INDIA. The three-year-old colt Keen Sight, by Nighlmarch from Good Sight, has been sold by the Estate of the late Sir Charles Clifford. Keen Sight has not had much racing, but a third in the Cashmere Plate at the Grand National meeting was followed by a win at Ashburton in November. He will bo shipped by an early steamer to Sydney, but it is understood that ho i will eventually be sent to India.
