Mercantile Marine Seeks Assistance
(Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, January 10. Declaring more widespread financial Assistance is imperative to mee competition from foreign subsidised lines, the United Kingdom Chambei of Shipping is proposing to the Board of Trade: The renewal of the annual tramp subsidy of £2,500,000 for five years. An annual subsidy of £5.000,000 for five years to assist deep-sea liners, £500,000 of which will be annually devoted to nearer Continental and Mediterranean services. Insistence on the greater use of British ships in the timber and coal trades. Y • An annual £500,000 subsidy for five years for tramps in the nearer Continental trade. A similar subsidy for British coasters,' and Also an assurance of fair competition from the railways. It is pointed out that special measures apart from financial, might ultimately be necessary to save the industry,
