LEFT FOR AUSTRALIA. R. S. Bagby left Auckland in the Wanganella on Friday, taking High Caste, Disdain and Stretto. BONSTAR FOR THAMES. Bonstar has stood up to recent racing, despite an unattractive front knee, and his trainer is confident that he will fulfill his early promise of proving a stayer. Bonstar is to contest the Hack Cup at Thames. ’ WOTAN’S FORM. The form of Wotan at Riccarton did not come up to expectations, and he failed agaiff' iriHhe Aucklitfld Cup and Stratford Cup. The pace at which the latter race was run in the early stages did not suit Wotan, but at the same time he appears a horse that shows his best only at long intervals. ASHLEY REED SUSPENDED. Ashley Reed, who has been riding In his best form, won the Two-year-old Handicap at •Williamstown (Victoria) on Cairnsmore, on December 9, but lost his licence for one month. He was adjudged guilty of forcing Divinity across Snow White and Glynt, causing the latter pair to lose ground near the half-mile; LUCKY JACK AFTER RECORD. Lucky Jack will endeavour to lower the grass .track record for a mile at the Timaru Trotting Club’s meeting on Saturday. Winner of the 1937 Trotting Cup, Lucky Jack is still one of the best pacers in commission. The grass track record stands at 2.1 1-5, to the credit of Vart Derby when he defeated Lawn Derby in a recent challenge match at Epsom. . . •

AN IMPROVED HORSE. The Sandwichman has made marked improvement since he joined F. Christmas’s stable at Riccarton, There was a disposition in some quarters to regard his win in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton as a fluke, but he dispelled that idea by his victory in the Oamaru President’s Handicap. Though he is eight years’ old. the Shambles gelding looks a good prospect, particularly as he is a useful'jumper. MAIDEN WITH PROSPECTS. The Siegfried colt Old Bill is still a maiden galloper, but his performances at the Auckland meeting disclosed great possibilities. After finishing second to Beaupartir in the Queen’s Plate, he was little more than a length from Defaulter when he finished fourth in the Derby, Peerless just beating him for third place. It is thought likely that next season he will be ready to match the efforts of his half-brother, Quadroon, in middle-distance events. A GREAT FAMILY. A notable feature of the holiday racing was the success of the progeny of Equitas. Oratory won two races, Royal Choice two, Hinerawe two, and Pen ran first and third. Comparisons have been made as to New Zealand’s best mares, but few mares in New Zealand can claim as many winners from her progeny as Equitas. Here they are; Oratress, Murihaupo, Wheritas, Equitant. Equitable, Interlocutor. Bank Note, Oral, Oratory, Oratorian, Dialogist, Windbag, Concentrate, Oratrix, Hinerawe, Martian Chief, Royal Choice, Hunting Bag, Hunting Lodge. Pen, and Martianette. ANSWER TO CORRESPONDENT. "Wager,” Kamo.—Red Manfred won the Groat Northern Derby in 1934. In this raoe ho was ridden by A, E. Ellis,
