Roosevelt Wants to Cut Right Wing
(Received 10 a.m.) WASHINGTON, January 7. Clearly recognising that divisions of opinion are threatening his hold on Congress, President- Roosevelt, in a fighting speech this evening, invited Conservative “Tweedledums” to leave the party and join the Republican “Tweedledees.” The Democrats must hold fast to the objectives of the New Deal and avoid dissension, or they would risk being repudiated in 1940. The President also warned the Democratic party that if it nominated a Conservative or an opportunist as President, its control of power would be shortlived. Decrying alarmist reports of disunity, Mr Roosevelt pointed out that he is the first President since James Munroe to serve two terms with majorities in both legislatures. The only trouble with the Democrats, he said, was that they had been feeding too well and were scared easily.
