Barcelona Again Bombed
LONDON, January I. After five months of immunity, Barcelona was bombed from the air three times, and 33 people were killed , and 92 wounded. The bombers cut a path 50 yards wide and three miles long across the centre of the city. Prompt alarm by sirens enabled crowds of people to escape front the streets, where they were on the way V home for the New Year celebrations. A Republican pursuit aeroplane overlook one bomber, and switched oh wing lights to indicate its position to anti-aircraft gunners, then chased the " quarry until the occupants were able to machine-gun the pilot and crash the machine in flames on to the sea. A bomb explosion blew members of * the British Club from a balcony, Tlae city was again bombed after the - departure of the International Bomb- £ ing Investigatory Commission, and four people were killed and 24 in- . ■'[ jured. / " General Franco has granted an am- v nesty to 50 men and women, who had been sentenced to death, says the Hen- / daye correspondent of the “Daily ■ Telegraph.” . • The squalid prisons . throughout Spain are overcrowded.
