Rail Excursion To Bay Of Islands
A full train of 15 cars carried about 500 people on the railway .excursion from Whangarei to Opua on Sunday. Excellent weather prevailed and the occasion proved an enjoyable outing. Large number of passengers were aboard when the train left Whangarei, and numerous others joined them at Hikurangi, Kawakawa and other intermediate stations. A fleet of 12 launches was hard pressed to transport the excursionists from Opua Wharf to Paihia and Russell, where the greater number spent the day. Some took part in launch excusions to Waitangi, while others patronised the surf bathing at Long Beach. The train, which left Whangarei at (3.25 a.m., allowed the excursionists to reach their objectives by midday, and left Opua for the return journey at 5.45 p.m.
