Luxmore Homestead Destroyed: Well-known Landmark
[Per Press Association. Copyright .] TIMARU, Tills Day. A well-known landmark, nearly 70 years old, the Luxmoore homestead, just north of Timaru, was totally destroyed by a spectacular fire in the early hours of this morning. It was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. Fahey, but Mr. Fahey was away on holiday, only Mrs. Fahey being homo, with her two children and sister. The noise of the fire awoke Mrs. Fahey soon after 3 o'clock, and she immediately called the Timaru brigade. By the lime the brigade arrived the centre of the roof had fallen in, and. fanned by a strong wind, the flames made a "save" of the house impossible. It was all the brigade could do to save one of the outhouses, and only one dressing table was brought intact out of the building. Much valuable furniture was lost. The house was associated with the early history of South Canterbury being built on the estate of Mr. P. R. Luxmoore, an early settlor from England.
