Holidaying Under Difficulties

Exposed only to winds from that quarter, campers in the bays of the Whangarei harbour, have suffered from the prevailing sou’-westerly weather

Approaching gale velocity at times, the wind was cuttingly keen for day after day, swimming being made unpleasant from this cause rather than because of water temperatures. Every bach and cottage from Onerahi to the Heads is tenanted, with a particularly large influx at Taui’ikura and Urquhart’s. Pataua, combining both river and surf swimming, and well sheltered even from the southerlies, carries a larger floating population than ever before. The beach was crowded yesterday, when visitors included members of the Taurikura Women's Institute, who held their annual picnic there.

Tuesday brought the first touch of summer for a fortnight, and ( the lower reaches of the Whangarei harbour were alive with launches, yachts and dinghies. Quite (a number of launch owners who had planned cruises abroad were deterred from doing so by the unpleasant weather, and anchored inside.

Fishing has brought little but a chill to the hardy ones. Casting a line at the entrance to the harbour yesterday, a Whangarei enthusiast landed a 151 b snapper, as well as a variety of smaller kinds.
