Nova, By Defeating Farr, Is Great “White Hope”
NEW YORK, December 17. By the manner in which Lou Nova, Californian boxing champion, outpointed Tommy Farr (Wales) in a 15round bout in Madison Square Garden , to-day, he became the world’s leading contender for the heavyweight title. The Welshman suffered the worst beating of his career, and only the bell at the close of the 14th round saved him from being knocked out. Nova had Farr staggering blindly, and punished him more severely than did Louis, Baer or Braddock.
It was one of the hardest hitting contests in the history of Madison Square. Farr held his own until the 14th round, when Nova concentrated on short explosive left hooks and right jolts, which, it seemed, must tear Farr’s head off his shoulders.
The Welshman swayed, as if caught by machiriegun fire, and reeled backwards to his own corner. The referee intervened as Farr was hanging on to
the I'opes. Nova, thinking he had won on a technical knockout, danced to his own corner, but Farr gamely staggered from the ropes in a helpless condition, and continued to take punishment •until the bell. .
His seconds, by frantic efforts, revived him sufficiently to weather the final round. •
Nova justified the' prediction of Dempsey and Tunney that he is the great white hope.
