Mussolini In Sardinia
II Duce made a brief speech to 30,000 Fascists and miners in the main square of Carbonia. He made no reference to Tunis, Corsica or Jibouti. He only praised Fascism and the self-sufficiency and bravery of the Sardinian soldiers. • He spent only a few hours at Sardinia. He spoke in a restrained tone, and his audience believed that this was done purposely to avoid increasing the anti-French spirit prevailing among Italians, so that Mr Chamberlain’s visit will not be jeopardised.
After hi's speech, he boarded the cruiser Sanantico, presumably to return to Gaeta, on the mainland.
