Gloomiest Christmas During Nazi Regime
(Received 1 p.m.) LONDON - , December 18. The Berlin correspondent of the “Daily Telegraph” says the country is facing the gloomiest Christmas since Herr Hitler assumed Power. Anxiety over home and foreign affairs is overshadowing the festival. It is increasingly clear that antiJcwish outrages and savage decrees have shaken the confidence of the average German more than anything. The purge of June, 1934, was forgotten comparatively rapidly, but the pogroms have left an overpowering feeling of shame., which is turning to bitter resentment. Word has flown around the country that the next campaign will be against the Roman Catholics and against the landed aristocracy. Fear is also growing that a foreign affairs drive in the springtime will bring the country close to wai’.
