Sick Girl’s Narrow Escape
[Special to “Northern Advocate ”l AUCKLAND, This Day. A sick girl, Miss Gladys Willmott, aged 16. had to be rescued from her burning bedroom, when her parents’ house at Swanson was completely destroyed by fire yesterday morning. It was only because Mrs Willmott is a light sleeper that the family was aroused in time to escape from the building, which was enveloped in flames.
The fire spread so rapidly that the house was destroyed within 12 minutes of the outbreak being discovered. “Among the things we have lost.” said Mrs Willmott, “are all the Christmas presents we had bought for our relatives and friends. There will be no Christmas for us now. Even the clothes we are wearing have been lent to us by our neighbours.” Among the possessions destroyed were an old Basket Bible and a rare edition of “Pilgrim’s Progress.”
