N.Z. Suggestion Not Noted
(Received , 9 a.m.) LONDON, December 16.
Speaking on the Export Credit Bill in the House of Commons, Mr • E. Smith (Labour-Stoke) said: “Some of us during the Coronation met representatives of the Dominions and Colonies. I understand'the Finance Minister of New Zealand, Mr Nash, specially submitted a number of constructive trade suggestions, but I believe a reply has not yet been given. We are not playing the game by not taking more notice of suggestions from New Zealand, Australia and other Dominions and Colonies.’’ The president of the Board of Trade, Mr Oliver Stanley, in reply to the debate, said Germany had as much right to trade as Britain, but her methods of competition had become unfair. Britain believed it would have been better to have made an amicable agreement to share the markets. He hoped it would be possible to reach an agreement enabling both countries to carry on a fair trade at fair prices instead of the ruinous price-cutting ruling today. It would be necessary, if that failed, to operate the measures provided in the bill.
