S.A. Commemorates Historic Trek

(Received 1.30 p.m.) CAPETOWN, December 15. The eve of the Voortrekker Centenary and memorial stone-laying, finds the country in a state of subdued excitement. English-speaking people have done their utmost to recognise the Afrikaans’ sentiment and have responded in the principal towns to every suggestion to add significance to the historic event. Forty thousand people are camped on a kopje overlooking Pretoria, where the stone will be laid tomorrow. The arrival of waggons, which have traversed the road taken by the Voortrekkers in 1835, torch-bearers carrying Riebeek’s diary and Piet Retief’s treaty with Chief Dingaan, symbolising the spread of culture, induced wild enthusiasm. Bonfires burned on all hilltops, while a choir of 5000 children sang hymns.
