Mother and Son Shot Dead

A double tragedy was discovered at Uruwhenua, in the Takaka county, when a woman and her son were found shot dead at their home. The victims were:—

Mrs A, Kerr, and Jack Kerr, aged 10 years. It is understood that both mother and son were shot with a .22 rifle.

A man was detained by the police in connection with the tragedy. Daughter’s Tragic Find.

It is understood that the tragedy occurred about 4.30 this morning. It was discovered by a daughter of the dead woman, Miss I. Kerr, who was living in the house at the time and gave the alarm to neighbours. The police at Takaka were informed, and Constable A. Strawbridge . went to the house. Later, the constable detained a man, whom he escorted back to Takaka. The Kerr family kept the post office at Uruwhenua, which is on the West Takaka road and about 82 miles from Nelson.

Inspector J. Carroll left Nelson for the scene of the tragedy this morning. The bodies were taken to Takaka by the police.
