Hikurangi Schools Dog Parade

Hikurangi School staged a dog show al the annual Parents’ -Day on Wednesday. It was an innovation as far as school functions are concerned. Consolidated with Mania and Waipaipai, Hikurangi School has a roll number of nearly 300. and. with all pupils and a large number ol parents and friends present, the school grounds wore the sotting for a big gathering. The weather was perfect.

During the atternoon a full concert programme of songs and dancing was presented on the lawn fronting the school, while the classrooms were thrown open to enable ihc public to inspect samples of the work clone during the year.

Mrs Donaldson’s Idea. The guiding influence behind the canine display was Mrs V. Donaldson, president of the Whangarei Kennel Club, who lias been on the school teaching staff for some weeks. “If it hadn’t been for Mrs Donaldson there would have betn no dog show,” said Mr J. G. Barclay. M.P. for Marsden. who was accompanied by Mrs Barclay.

He congratulated Mrs Donaldson and her assistants on the show, and also thanked the donors of prizes in connection with the event.

“I always feel that. I am among friends in Hikurangi,” said Mr Barclay, in expressing appreciation of the welcome extended both to him and to Mrs Barclay by the headmaster, Mr E. Boyd. ‘T am a very shy man and I hope that you will make yourselves at home with us.”

M.P. Presents Prizes

The judge was Mr J. H, Murphy, of Whangarei, and Mr Barclay presented ■the prizes in the show as follows: — Best cared-for dog; Ray Pickles 1. Barbara Weaver 2, Minnie Smith 3. Best pedigree dog: Jessie Malcolm I. Mervyn Taylor 2. Avis Ritson 3. Best long-haired dog: Avis Ritson 1, Selwyn Lomas 2. Dawn Wallace 3. Best short-haired dog: Jessie Malcolm 1, Mervyn Taylor 2, Ailsa McKay 3. Special prize for fox terrier, donated by the judge; Harry Platt. Best cocker spaniel (prize donated by Mrs Anderson): Dawn Wallace. Best cattle dog: Freda Delaney. Best gun dog: Jessie Malcolm. Kennel Club Helps. Among members of the Whangarei Kennel Club who assisted with the show were: Mrs Anderson, Mrs Griffiths, Mrs H. 11. Parkin and Mrs Lingard. Prizes were donated by Mrs Donaldson. Mr Murphy, Mrs Anderson and Inspector O'Hara. On display during the afternoon were Mr Murphy’s New Zealand champion fox terrier, Mrs Anderson’s Labrador retriever and Papillon, Mrs Lingard’s Pekingese and'Mrs Griffiths’, bull-dog. At the conclusion of judging, an adjournment was made to the lawn fronting the school, where seats were provided for the visitors, while the children staged a programme of songs, part-songs and folk-dancing.. Each

class presented several concerted items. Hikurangi Excels in Sports, In addition, Mr Barclay presented the Worner Shield to the school’s football learn (Standards 3 and 4 and. under) as the winners of the Whangarei primary schools’ competition. He also presented the Settlers’ Cup to the bantam football team (five stone and under', winners of their grade in the schools’ seven-a-side tournament. The cup for the winner of the girls' singles at the Whangarei primary schools’ tennis tournament was handed to Miss Mamie Carter. During the afternoon a bring and buy stall in aid of school sports equipment funds did good business. The classrooms wore thrown open to the visitors, so that they could inspect samples of work done by the pupils during the year. Most outstanding was the excellent poster work by pupils of standard 6, original essays by standards 5 and '6, pen and ink work by standards 4, 5 and 6, and writing and illustrations by standards 1 and 2.

Later in the day members of the staff and the school committee met at afternoon tea, when the committee chairman, Mr J. Blake, congratulated Mr Boyd and his assistants on the excellent results achieved during the year.

Mr Boyd, in responding, thanked the committee members for their cooperation. Mr Barclay thanked the school authorities for their invitation to be present at the function, and also congratulated both staff and committee on their efforts in tire interests of the school. Competitions. Several competitions were held in connection with the function, and prizes were won as follows, the names of donors appearing in parentheses: Cake, Mrs Stocklcy, jun. (.Miss Rickard); pig, Mrs Cadman (Mr Dempster); goose, Agnes Campbell (Mr Boyd); cake, E. Langford (Mrs Marinkovic); cake, Mrs R. Mclnnes (Mrs Milligan).

A list of candidates who passed the Training College entrance examination held in November, ha? been issued. The name of A. P. Stanley, of Whangarei, appears in list two, which includes candidates who obtained partial passes.
