Especial to “Northern Advocate ■ ;;t AUCKLAND, This Day.
:far t . too many pupils attempt the matriculation examination after three years of secondary school study with little chance of success.
This is the opinion of the headmaster of the Auckland Grammar School, Mr C. M. Littlejohn. “The undue pressure to which they must subject themselves is distinctly bad for young boys, and the experience gained by sitting for the examihation is far outweighed by the definite harm done to these candidates,” Mr Littlejohn said, speaking at the. annual prize-giving ceremony of the school today. Dominates Teaching.
‘‘The popularity of this examination is so deeply entrenched in the mind of parents and employers that it dominates the curriculum of our sixth forms to an inordinate extent, narrowing, its content and crowding out much that would be of lasting value to our boys,” he said. “As an entrance examination to the university it is recognised as not being of sufficiently high standard, but it is a sine qua non with, many business organisations for entrance to employment.”
