Dates Sought For Centennial Functions
Fixing dates for Northland local Centennial functions was considered al lasi, night’s meeting of the Northland Zone A Centennial Committee executive.
Whangarei’s claims were for February 23-25; March 2, 17 and 27; May 6; June 8; July 6;~August 10; September (one week); October 1 to 7: and November 1 to 7.
Hobson has requested February 7 to 15, and Mangonui the following week (February 18 to 24); March 2 and 21; and August 23 and 24. Otamatea has requested March 1 to 9; and Bay of Islands. January 29. None of the Whangarei datjs has any special significance, except for the last two months, when the foundation. of the borough and county will be commemorated. Ota m a tea will celebrate the foundation of the county on March 8 and 9. Mangonui is holding a carnival week between February 18 and 22, and will hold ,an A. and P. Show en March 2, while March. 21 will see the crowning of the queen. August 23 and 24 will see a winter sports carnival.
These dates have boon forwarded to the Auckland 'Provincial Council for confirmation.
Clashing Not Detrimental,
At the meeting there was some comment on the fact that the dates clashed in some instances. Delegates felt, however, that, where centres were some distances apart, there would be little disadvantage in holding functions on the same date. For example, Matamata and Whangarei will be celebrating at the same time. “I can’t see how celebrations in the North would clash with any in other parts of the Dominion,’’ commented the chairman.
