The Wellington representative of J. M. Dent and Sons, of London, has received cabled advice of the death of Mr Hugh R. Dent, head of the firm. Mr Dent, who visited the Dominion last December, was well known to New Zealand authors. His firm has published books by several leading writers of the Dominion.
The appointment of Mr George Patrick Shepherd as Judge of the Native Land Court for Akaroa and the South Island Native Land Court District‘was gazetted last night, as also was the appointment of Mr John Harvey as Judge of the Native Land Court for the Wafariki Native Land Court District,
Mr L. F. Robbins, of Temuka, retiring producers’ representative on the Honey Control Board, has been reelected. There are two producers’ representatives on the board who retire i'n alternate years. Mr Robbins will hold office for two years from January 1.
Mr H. R Young, one of the two New Zealand members of the expedition made to Antartica by RearAdmiral R. E. Byrd of the United States Navy, in 1933-35, was presented with the Congressional Medal by Mr- J. G. Groeninger, United States Consul in Auckland. Mr Groeninger congratulated Mr Young on receiving the award, which has also been made to the second New Zealander, in the expedition, Mr B, Fleming.
Sir Stephen Allen ,of Morrinsville, accompanied by his son Peter, will leave for England by the Rotorua on Saturday. Peter Allen is to report to the Admiralty in January and will join the drill ship Erebus at Portsmouth.
