Rain Brightens Stock Markets

Commercial

The rainfall during the week had a brightening-up tendency on. stock values throughout Northland and this goes to prove that the spring sales are depending solely on the season. The feed should have reached the plentiful stage at this time of the year, but unfortunately the pastures are backward and a few days’ heavy rain is very necessary to promote the growth. Store Cattle. Tfoere is little activity in the store cattle market but there is still a keen inquiry for yearling Jersey heifers o 5 good size and quality. Yearling run cattle are changing hands, the steers realising to £4 15/while heifers ranged from £3 5/- to £3 12/6, Slow Demand For Steers. The demand for grown steers is ■ slow but considerable activity is expected in this class of cattle within a week or two. Beef. —Fat bullocks are selling well and there has been no noticeable alteration in values during the week. Fat cows and heifers have eased a little.

Dairy cattle. —There is a definite shortage of good quality cattle on the market at present and where firstclass stock is offered for sale an excellent sale usually ensues. At sales' this week genuine dairy cows realised to £l2 5/- while good quality well-grown heifers have been selling to’£9. The average offerings of dairy heifers now coming to hand are comprised mostly of small and backward cattle and the competition obtained is poor. Porker Values Harden. Pigs.—Heavy baconers sell from £3 6/- to £3 10/-, while second quality and unfinished pigs realise £2 17/6 to £3 3/-. Values for porkers have hardened a little of late, and are selling from £2 5/- to £2 15/-. Stores and weaners are coming forward in large numbers, the ruling price for the for mer being 30/- to 35/- and the latter 15/- to 20/-. "
