Miss Stewart Qualifies In Ladies' Championship

The Auckland ladies’ provincial golf championships were continued today at Maungakiekie links. Miss J. Stewart, of Whangarei, qualified seventh. The following players qualified:— Championship event: Mrs.. H. V. Johnstone, Maungakiekie, 81, 83—164; Mrs R. S. Beighton, Titirangi, 83, 85— 168; Mrs E. L. Barker, Rotorua, 84, 86 —170; Mrs C. E. Grevatt, Maungakiekie, 87, 84—171; Mrs R. S. Whale, Titirangi, 84, 87—171; Mrs H. McDonald, Te Awamutu, 82, 89—171; Miss J. Stewart, Whangarei, 88, 84—172; Mrs J. Jerrat, Maungakiekie, 37, 84— 173; Mrs G. F. Ferguson, Auckland, 86, 87—173; Mrs W. S. Ralph, Auckland", 85, 89 —174; Mrs J. M. Alison, Titirangi, 90, 85—175; Mrs M. Shroff. Titirangi, 90. 86—176; Miss M. Stevens, North Shore, 90, 87—177; Mrs E. J. Nolan, Maungakiekie, 90, 87 —177; Mrs G. S. Laird, Maungakiekie. 88, 89—177; Mrs R. L. Wilson. Titirangi, 92, 86—178. In the Middlemore Cup contest for the second 16, Mrs M. J. Lynch (Whangarei) qualified with 90, 90 —180. Miss D. Steele (Whangarei) did not qualify, failing m her round yesterday afternoon after a round of 89 in j the morning. , 1 The results of the first round of the championships were as follows: Mrs R. L. Wilson (Titirangi) beat Mrs H. V. Johnston (Maungakiekie) at the 20th; Mrs G. F. Ferguson (Auckland) beat Mrs J. Jerr'at (Maungakiekie), 8 and 6; Mrs M. Schroff (Titirangi) beat Mrs R. S. Whale (Titirangi), 5 and 3; Mrs C. E. Grevatt (Maungakiekie) beat Miss M. Stevens (North Shore), 3 and 2; Mrs E. L. Marker (Rotorua) beat Mrs E. J. Nol'an (Maungakiekie), 6 and 5; J. M. Alison .Titirangi) beat Mrs H. McDonald (Te Awamutu) at the 19th; Mrs R. S. Deighton (Titirangi) beat Mrs G. S. Laird (Maungakiekie), 2 and 1; Miss J. Stewart (Whangarei) beat Mrs W. S. Ralph (Auckland), 1 up. In the Middlemore Cup, Mrs M. J. Lynch (Whangarei) beat Mrs A. M. Grant (Auckland), 2 up. Miss Stewart’s Fine Play.
Mrs W. S. Ralph was another to put a fighting finish against Miss J. Stewart, of Whangarei. She was 4 down, with five holes to go, but, on playing the 18th, had the opportunity of scoring the match. It was not to be, however, and the Whangarei player staved off 'the final challenge, to confirm the impression she had made in the p'ast two seasons, that she will reach the top flight.
Godwits Arrive in North
The first flight of godwits to arrive in the North this season, alighted at Parcngarenga on October 1, and was witnessed by Mr. E. G. Frost, who keeps under observation the phenomena of the bird world, and lias watched the arrival and departure of the godwits on many occasions,
