Fire at Taheke. Fire completely destroyed the residence of Mr J. King, Taheke. All personal effects and furniture were destroyed, the loss including many valuable band instruments. * * * • Thanksgiving. At the services held in the various churches in Whangarei to-morrow, special reference will be made to the peaceful settlement of the crisis in Europe. Citizens are invited to attend their own churches in order to render thanks to God for peace. • * * • Local Dancing Teacher’s Success. Miss Claudia Warrington was successful with her pupils in the R.A.D. dancing examinations which were held in Auckland last Saturday. All passed with high marks. Successful pupils were Misses Jean Warne (grades 1,2 and 3, honours); Marie Thompson (grade .1); Yvonne Neill (grade 1); and Marie Stainton (grade 1). * * * * Drunk-in-Charge Case. Charged with having been intoxicated in charge of a motor vehicle in Walton Street early this morning. Lawrence Pitts appeared before Mr H. C. Hemphill, J.P., in the Police Court yesterday. On the application of the police, a remand Was granted until next Monday, bail being allowed at £SO, with one surety of a like amount. # » * * Assistance for War-minded Employees. | Every assistance is to be given by l the North Auckland Electric Power Board to enable its employees to ‘ undertake military training. At yes-1 terday’s meeting of the board a letter ■ in this connection was received from, the Minister of Defence. Several board members stressed the need for allowing employees facilities for training,. and it was decided to circularise em-, ployees with a copy of the Minister’s letter and convey the board’s feelings' in the matter. i
Boy Struck by Horse. When a horse galloped into' a -pad- ;, dock in which children were playing at Taheke, Barry Keymer met with a very nasty accident ; ; !£he ' animal knocked him over, causing him 2 yto have concussion. He was rushed :to Kaikohe fob medical attention and his condition last night was satisfactory. • * * v Kowhal in Full Bloom. A ~ Whatever may be said of the mud in Wheki Valley, the eyes:of travellers on the Dargaville-Whangarei highway are diverted from this wintry aspect to the spectacle of beautiful yellow kowhai blossoms. For miles through the valley, these trees are to be seen displaying their attractive; flowers, making a striking contrast with the green surroundings of native bush and budding willow trees. ♦ • « « Kensington Park Provision. ;! An amenity greatly appreciated 1 by dairy-farmers who attended .the: Whangarei Jersey Club’s annual ; bull , sale at Kensington Park yesterday was r the newly-formed 1 wide-metalled{ pathway running from the entrance on Park Drive across the back of the park to Stanley Street. The Whangarei ■ Borough Council staff had been two- :■} ceeding with this work some - time previously, but a.special effort was made to complete the task in time for die sale. ‘
